Bathing Aids

A person with Alzheimer's disease or Dementia may not need a complete bath every day. A sponge bath or bathing with disposable wipes may be enough. Caregivers may find establishing a routine for your loved one with Alzheimer's disease or Dementia is helpful. Scheduling baths for the same time each day, the mornings or evenings, and choosing the most relaxed time of the day may be helpful.

The caregiver should always check the temperature of the water in the bath or shower. Using a bath chair with handrails may help the person feel more secure in the tub, and the handrail help the person to stand with less risk of falling. Rubber mats in the tub will help prevent slipping. The bathroom will be more comfortable if it is warm and well-lit.

For people with Alzheimer's Disease or Dementia who can offer little help, special bathing equipment such as a bath lift, may be needed. An Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist can provide advice on how to safely bathe your loved one.
